We’d say that people often ask us why we’re named Barry Sanders Supercenter, but as most people who visit are from Oklahoma, it’s not really the case. Just about everyone knows who Barry Sanders is, and why he’s worth being named after!
Barry Sanders was born in Wichita, Kansas, and started playing football at his local high school. In 1986, he enrolled at Oklahoma State University and played for the Cowboys right here in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Two years later, he became their starting running back after leading the nation in yards per kickoff return and scoring 8 touchdowns. After lighting it up at Oklahoma State University, it was off to the NFL for Barry Sanders. The Detroit Lions selected him with the 3rd overall pick in the 1989 Draft.
The rest, as they say, is history. Early concerns about Barry Sanders’ size were immediately thrown out of the window when he showed just how elusive he could be. A low center of mass, explosive speed, and incredible strength for his height made Barry Sanders a handful for his opponents.
By the time he retired in 1999, Barry Sanders’ college and professional career set the benchmark for many aspiring athletes. Barry Sanders is a member of the college and professional football Hall of Fame, is ranked as the #1 most elusive runner in NFL history, holds the record for most 1,500-yard seasons at 5, and won countless other awards throughout his career and thereafter.
